College Sports: The Pac-12 Goes Digital

Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area not far from Silicon Valley, it makes sense that the Pacific-12 Conference would strive to be on the cutting edge of innovation in college sports.

The league took a big step in that direction Wednesday by relaunching its official website as a streamlined, more digitally savvy operation meant to lead it into a new era of content creation and consumption. It also kicked off a new TV Everywhere initiative to let fans watch video anyplace at any time.

Out is a dated website, called Pac-12.org, offering fans little in the way of articles, video and other goodies. In is Pac-12.com, which includes social updates from different schools, a dedicated video channel, and schedules sortable by team, sport and coverage network. The new approach isn't just a result of being located in a startup-heavy area, says David Aufhauser, the conference?s new vice president and general manager of digital media; the league views its media presence as a startup in itself.

"We're a sports conference, but at our core we're a startup ourselves," Aufhauser told Mashable. "When I started in January, we had nothing but a legacy website."

The TV everywhere push, first announced in January, is a wholly league-owned and operated platform for streaming content to tablets, smartphones, computers and smart TVs around the world. With an iPad app schedule to launch next week and Android and iPhone offerings to follow, it's designed to not just provide access to the major revenue sports football and men's basketball, but to dozens of Olympic sports -- where the conference schools excel -- as well.

To help make its new makeover a success, the Pac-12 has partnered with a range of traditional startups including Ooyala, SnappyTV and Mass Relevance. Aufhauser believes that mix of tech industry partnerships and connections, coupled with its premium college sports content, will deliver fans a unique and top-tier experience.

"We try to take inspiration from a variety of brands and startups," he says, "rather than just the more insular world of college sports."
