Will airbag vests become the new standard in motorcycle safety ...

While motorcycle riding is a favorite pastime of people throughout the United States, there is no disputing that it is an inherently dangerous activity. In fact, statistics show that in 2011 alone at least 4,500 wrongful deaths could be attributed directly to motorcycle accidents.

Fortunately, motorcycle manufacturers have made significant strides in making their models safer over the last decade, including the introduction of anti-lock braking systems and other key features. Safety equipment manufacturers have also made significant strides in rider safety, creating everything from stronger helmets to shock absorbent body armor.

Interestingly, one safety equipment manufacturer appears to have taken things to an entirely new level with new product called an airbag vest.

Manufactured by Safermoto, the $375 airbag vest is actually comprised of a series of airbags designed to protect a rider's neck, chest, sides, back and hips in a motorcycle crash.

How exactly is this accomplished?

The vest is outfitted with a carbon dioxide gas cartridge designed to inflate the airbag system in only a fraction of a second. The trigger on the cartridge, in turn, is connected to a coiled wire that runs from the rider to a fixed point on the motorcycle, such that when the rider is thrown from their bike in a motorcycle crash and the wire separates from the vest, it will inflate.

(For those who use or own newer model treadmills, it's akin to the safety cord that clips to the runner/walker's body and which automatically shuts off the treadmill in the event of a fall.)

It is worth noting that the airbag vest requires at least 60 pounds of force to activate, meaning it can't be accidentally triggered by a forgetful rider who forgets to unclip their vest from the coiled wire.

It remains to be seen how receptive riders will be to this newest piece of safety equipment. Given the degree of protection provided, $375 may seem like a bargain.

What are your thoughts on the airbag vest? As a rider, would you consider adding it to your collection of safety gear?

If you have been injured in a motorcycle wreck or are dealing with the wrongful death of a loved one, remember that you can seek justice. A qualified legal professional can explain your rights and inform you of your options.
