NAR: New and existing home prices far apart | HomeFinder.com News

At the peak of the real estate crisis, prices of new and existing homes were fairly close together, but as the market steadily recovers the gap has begun to widen, according to Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors.

It makes perfect sense that new home prices are higher than existing homes, as they come with new carpets, appliances and paint and are typically bigger, he said. Yun added that one of the main reasons the gap has widened is rising costs of building materials and labor. New homes also typically come with a minimum price for builders to even consider construction ? $220,000 Yun said.

Yun said he believes high costs of construction-material should continue to widen the gap between new and existing home prices. That being said, buyers could potentially find some deals in the existing-homes market.?

Despite the widening gap, the median price for existing-home sales has been steadily rising. According to NAR, the national median price in August was $187,000, which was 9.5 percent higher than August 2011 and the sixth straight month of year-over-year increases.?

Galaxy Nexus Wireless Charging

Galaxy Nexus Wireless Charging

Are there any official solutions to allow inductive wireless charging for the Galaxy Nexus?

It would be nice to be able to get some mat that does it for my work office so I can just set my phone down and it instantly start charging.

If no official solution, anyone have any good links for a successful mod?

Armbars, Americanas, title shots and more: UFC 152 notes

A few observations and notes as you decompress from UFC 152:

-- Did you gasp when Vitor Belfort hit the armbar early in his loss to Jon Jones? Because I did, and I'm still amazed Jones was not injured. It's one of the few times he's been in danger, and his ability to get out of the submission was impressive.

-- Jones' fourth-round Americana submission earned him the $65,000 submission of the night bonus. The other bonuses went to Cub Swanson for his knockout of Charles Oliveira, and T.J. Grant and Evan Dunham for their bloody fight of the night.

-- At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said a fight between Michael Bisping and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva could be interesting. Nothing in Bisping's win over Stann would indicate that to be so.

-- Demetrious Johnson winning the flyweight championship will go down in the record books because he's the first-ever 125-lb champ. But it should also be remembered for the fantastic speed shown by Johnson as he picked apart the very tough Joseph Benavidez.

Tick in Man's Ear Gives Him Tinnitus - - Health.com

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) ? When a 63-year-old man went to a hospital in Switzerland to report a buzzing in his ear, the staff got more than they bargained for when they looked inside. A tick was attached to his eardrum, and it possibly got there with the help of a friendly feline.

The man is fine now that the tick has been removed, according to a brief report in the Sept. 20 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. While it?s uncommon for ticks to make their way into the ear canal, emergency physicians say insects do make appearances in this fragile orifice.

?Insects in the ear are relatively common so this case is not very surprising,? said Dr. Donald Keamy Jr., a pediatric otolaryngologist ? ear, nose and throat doctor ? at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. ?A case report like this is likely one of many other cases that were not reported.?

The report said the man visited a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, while suffering from itching and ?bubbling tinnitus,? a kind of buzzing, in the ear. ?Technically, this is not the typical high-pitched noise that is heard by patients with hearing loss,? said Keamy, who was not involved with the case.

An evaluation of his right ear revealed that a tick had attached itself to the eardrum. The tick had probably caused the buzzing sound through its contact with the eardrum, Keamy explained.

The tick species is a type that?s often found on cats in Europe.

The hospital removed the tick by numbing the man?s ear and then using a suction device to suck it out. The tick can spread Lyme disease, but tests later revealed that the man didn?t get infected; he recovered without further problems.

How did a tick manage to get in the man?s ear in the first place? ?On review,? the report stated, ?the patient remembered having had close contact with his domestic cat the evening before the symptoms began.?

Keamy said the tick could have bitten the man inside his ear, but probably wouldn?t have caused permanent damage.

Dr. Michael Lanigan, an attending physician in emergency medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City, offered this advice for people who live in or visit places where ticks live: ?The best way to prevent tick-borne disease is to check yourself and others ? particularly your children ? for ticks frequently.?

Keamy added that it?s smart to wear long-sleeved clothing while you?re in wooded areas where ticks live. Treating your dog or cat to keep ticks at bay is another good idea, he said. ?If you believe you have had a tick bite,? he said, ?see your primary care physician to discuss possible antibiotic treatment.?

Verizon Galaxy Nexus finally lands Jelly Bean update

Verizon Galaxy Nexus finally lands Jelly Bean update

As Alton Brown is fond of saying, "your patience will be rewarded." Today, those of you with Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus handsets (at least those that didn't run out and download an unofficial Jelly Bean) are finally getting your reward. Android version 4.1.1 (better known as JRO03O among the hack happy) is being pushed out OTA to Big Red customers, complete with the preemptive magic of Google Now in tow. If you haven't seen an alert yet, head to the About Phone section in your settings, and tap System Updates. Having recently been welcomed back to the AOSP fold, we'd have hoped for an update sooner, but it's still among the first wave of handsets to move to the latest version of Android. Now if only this would restore Google Wallet functionality. (Hey, a guy can dream can't he?) The complete announcement from Verizon awaits after the break.
